Burns are a major problem in Nepal, but burns care receives a low priority. The mortality rate from sizeable burns is high and survivors frequently have life-changing injury with severe scaring and contractures. Working in collaboration with ‘Interburns’, STCMLive has helped to support the staff at Kanti with training, provided essential equipment and facilitated exchange visits. Outcomes for children with burns treated in Kanti have improved over the last ten years and Kanti staff teach Essential Burn Care throughout Nepal. We have worked to create a Nepalese Burns Society to share knowledge and expertise.
Sometimes the training in new skills has been relatively simple. Staff now use cheap materials as splints whilst burns are healing. This technique reduces the skin contractions which otherwise can severely limit limb movements.
